Auditing 50 of the world's top websites
and apps — to Google's own standard.

Before technical audits became a standard agency service, Vinod Sanadhya — now the practitioner behind SignalScaler — led this hands-on project directly for Google, evaluating 50 of the world's leading websites and their corresponding mobile applications against Google's own quality standards — spanning industries from finance to retail to technology, and geographies across the globe.

The Challenge

Auditing 50 of the world's top websites and their corresponding mobile applications, to Google's own exacting standards, is a very different kind of challenge from a typical client audit. There is no single industry, no single technology stack, and no single type of user journey to evaluate against. A finance platform, a retail giant, and a media property all needed to be assessed with the same rigour and the same consistent methodology — despite having almost nothing in common technically.

The work demanded genuine technical depth across mobile responsiveness, app performance, and cross-platform user experience — and the discipline to apply the same evaluation criteria fairly across 50 very different digital products.

The core discipline
"Auditing to someone else's standard — especially Google's — leaves no room for personal judgment calls dressed up as rigour. The methodology has to be consistent, whether you're evaluating a bank or a media site."

The Approach

The project ran on a systematic audit methodology applied identically across all 50 websites and apps, regardless of industry, geography, or technology stack.

Phase 1
Scope and criteria definition
Defined a consistent evaluation framework covering mobile responsiveness (viewport handling, touch target sizing, load speed across devices), app quality (UX flow, performance under real usage, stability), and digital experience alignment between a brand's website and its mobile app.
Phase 2
Systematic audit execution
Applied the same evaluation criteria across all 50 websites and their corresponding mobile applications — spanning finance, retail, technology, media, and more, across multiple geographies. Every audit followed the identical methodology, regardless of how different the underlying product or industry was.
Phase 3
Findings and standards documentation
Documented findings against Google's quality standards for each site and app, covering technical compliance, performance issues, and experience inconsistencies between web and mobile versions of the same product. This documentation work — done consistently across such a wide range of real, high-traffic products — is what shaped a lasting, practical understanding of what actually separates a good digital experience from a merely functional one.

What We Evaluated

Mobile Responsiveness

Evaluated how each website performed across a genuine range of devices and screen sizes — not just whether a site technically "worked" on mobile, but whether it worked well.

App Performance & UX

Reviewed the corresponding mobile application for each website — assessing whether the app delivered a genuinely native-quality experience or felt like an afterthought to the web product.

Digital Experience Consistency

Assessed whether a brand's website and app told the same story and delivered the same core value — a surprisingly common failure point even among well-resourced companies.

Technical Standards Compliance

Evaluated each product against established technical best practices and quality benchmarks, applied fairly regardless of the company's size or industry.

The Outcome

This was a project-based technical engagement, not an ongoing growth programme — the value delivered was the audit itself: rigorous, consistent findings across 50 major digital products, evaluated to Google's own standard.

Honest framing
"This was a 2016-17 project. We're not claiming it as an ongoing relationship, and we won't overstate what it means today. What it does mean: we were doing technical audits to the highest possible standard before most agencies had made it a service at all."

What This Means for Your Business

Technical SEO and digital experience audits are now a fairly standard agency offering — but the depth of methodology behind them varies enormously. Having built and applied an audit framework across 50 major digital products, to Google's own quality bar, is the kind of experience that shapes what "rigorous" actually means in practice.

The specific standards from a 2016-17 project won't map perfectly onto today's technical landscape — mobile web has changed, AI search has changed what "digital experience" even means. But the underlying discipline — consistent methodology, fair evaluation regardless of how impressive or established a product looks, honest documentation of what's actually wrong — is exactly what informs how technical audits get done for SignalScaler clients today.

This is a credibility signal, not a current retainer — and we think it's more honest to frame it that way than to imply an ongoing relationship that doesn't exist.
